There are many social issues in the community and one of them is poverty. In 2013, fourteen and a half percent of the people in the United States were in poverty (Feeding America). Poverty tends to result from unemployment, low income, or a lack of education (Poverties.org). To begin with, Poverty is a big social issue that needs to be stopped as it leads to crime, hunger, and homelessness. It can rot communities from the inside out. If people could tackle this at home then they could more easily help with global issues. People should get involved in helping these people. Poverty can be felt everywhere whether a person is rich or poor. People should help those in poverty after being fortunate to have what they have (NIV Bible). It is actually cheaper to send someone to college than a youth correctional facility (Ward). Education can help the next generation do what the last generation did not. Additionally, crime affects real-estate values as it creates bad impressions leaving the people trying to sell their houses unable to sell them and get out of the situation. This shows that crime has a domino effect on neighborhoods. Local businesses suffer decline as a result of crime again showing a domino effect (Ward). A second effect of poverty is hunger. In 2013 nearly sixteen percent of Americans lived in households that were insecure on food (Feeding America). People throw away so much food that could feed so many people who are hungry today. Further, parents end up passing on their meals so that their children can eat. Hunger is bad physically as it is a long term way of suffering that can eventually lead to death. Just going a few hours without food is not comfortable for people. It is hard to imagine being in this kind of situation. Additionally, with hunger comes a better chance of getting diseases due to the lack of nutrients to build up immunity (Poverties.org). Throughout this year in Dual Enrollment English, I definitely believe I have made many improvements in my writing. I think one of the main reasons behind this is the editing process. In the past few years in English, I have never bothered to read my papers over once I finished writing them. As soon as I was done, I would save it and turn it in. I preferred to edit as I went along, which I still do, however that was not sufficient. Reading the whole paper over gave me a better look at the format of papers and helped me catch any mistakes I might have missed. I realized looking at the format of my papers was very important and I should have been doing it as long as I have been writing papers. By switching sentences and paragraphs around, I think some of my papers made more sense and were easier to read because they flowed better. If it were not for being required to use Smarthinking, I do not think I would have changed how I would edit. The size of the older population is projected to double over the next 30 years, growing to 70 million by 2030. The population age 85 and older is currently the fastest growing segment of the elderly. In 2000, an estimated 2 percent of the population is over 85. By 2050, the percentage in this age group is projected to increase to almost 5 percent of the United States population. This change in the population has affected every aspect of American society, presenting challenges as well as opportunities to policymakers, families, businesses and healthcare providers. In addition, as the older population grows larger, it is also becoming more diverse, reflecting the demographic changes in the United States population as a whole over the past century. Over the next 50 years, programs and services for the older population will require greater flexibility to meet the demands of a diverse and changing population. As a result, the research being conducted by social scientists and healthcare workers on different ethnic groups and the aging will be even more beneficial in the future. The hope is to make life for the elderly as positive as possible. The more that is known about their individual needs, the better it will be for all of them. Implications of Social Media on Society More than a few students have been kicked out of school for collaborating on Twitter, hi5, Facebook, MySpace, and the like on assigned individual projects. It is no longer news that some individuals have missed out on employment opportunities due to inappropriate content or associations on their Linkedln or Facebook pages. Some teachers have also been requested to step down due to overtly sexual content within their social networks. They began reaching out to such people to gauge their interest in Bacon Salt, and not only did they find interest, they started receiving orders even before they had a product yet. It was amazing and scary at the time; we were not prepared for the onslaught.† The viral aspect of this experience branched into non-social media channels, and they even received a free endorsement fr om the Gotham Girls Roller Derby team. It is one thing to get buzz about one’s product but it is a completely different thing to sell it – and sell it they did. The spice that made everything taste like bacon incredibly sold 600,000 bottles in only six months. â€Å"We did not even have a product at the beginning; instead, we bought cheap spice bottles, printed out Bacon Salt logos and Scotch taped them onto the bottles†.
